Photo class "Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk" - Day 1

3月から４月にかけて写真のレッスンを取りました。ズームによるオンラインレッスンです。講座の名前は「Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk」。良い和訳を思いつけないのですが、写真の講評の仕方や見方、何を前提に写真を撮りに行くか、という感じ。技術的なことではなく、こういう講座を取りたかったのでちょうど良かったです。週一回木曜日の夜で一回３時間、全１０回。

講座は私が時々クラスを取ってる近所のアートスクール主催。講師は普段フィルムやダークルームのレッスンをやってる人でした。生徒は全部で14人！結構多かったです。しかもどう見ても平均年齢70歳以上（笑）。２０代から３０代とみられる若い女性が二人、７０歳超えてるかもと思われる女性が一人、私、あとは全部やっぱり７０歳以上？みたいな男性群。いかにもフィルムカメラで白黒写真やってます！な方々ばかり。講師のことも長く知ってる人が多かったです。ちょっとやりづらいかなと思ったけど、そんなこともなく、とても楽しいクラスでした。

レッスン１回目は、講評の基本の仕方。「この写真いいね」「これ好き」だけで終わるコメントではなく、ちゃんとした講評。基本のやり方があって、あとはそこから膨らませていけば良いということでした。簡単じゃないけど、慣れもある、と。

基本は３ステップ。

１。技術的なことをコメント。カメラの種類やレンズについてなど。

２。構図について見てわかる事実をコメント。線、距離感、組み合わせ、色等々。

３。最後に写真から何を感じたか。何が「ワォ」だったか。

いや、難しいです（笑）写真見てカメラやレンズを語れるほど詳しくないし。構図はまぁＯＫ。そして結局何がワォだったのかを言葉にするのが難しいわけで。日本語でも難しいのに、私の貧相な英語のボキャブラリーでは対応しきれず。まぁ、だからこういう講座をとったわけでもあるのですが。他の生徒の表現がとても勉強になりました。

この日は最初にいくつかの写真を見て実践。その後は映画のシーンを使って（その場合ステップ１は無し）。グループに分かれて講評し合いました。映画っていうのがまた楽しかったですね。色を効果的に使った映画のシーンを渡され、そこから読み取れること、感じ取れることを話し合いました。文化的な違いもあるかなと思うのですが、アメリカは褒めて育てる文化。みんな褒めるのが上手い。よくまぁ次から次へと褒める言葉が出てくるなぁと感心してしまいました。

間に１０分程度の休憩をはさみましたが、あっという間の３時間。楽しい！

宿題は、色が効果的に使われてる映画を見て、幾つかのシーンを選んで、色がどう使われてるのか、どんな意味を持っているのかをコメントしてくる、というものでした。

I took a zoom online photo class, "Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk" in Mar - Apr. The class is about how to talk about the photos, how to do critiques, how you do the photo walk with which theme etc... It was once a week, 3 hours on Thursday night. Ten classes in total.

The instructor is a professional photographer who usually teaches film camera or dark room. There are 14 students in total and many of them sound like they've already known the instructor or each other for a long time. I thought it could be difficult for me to fit to this class.... but I was wrong. It was a fun class after all : )

Day 1. We learned how to do critiques. Not just "I like it", but how you see the photo and why you like it. There is a basic method how to do it and once you get familiar with it, you could expand it to however you want.

3 steps are needed.

1. comment about the technical things

2. comment about the composition

3. comment what was "Wow" to you

It's not easy... I don't have enough knowledge to comment about the technic... 2 is fine, I guess and 3, that's the most difficult part for me. I need to learn more vocabulary! It was good to hear what other students said and what type of expression or words they used. I think Americans are good at complimenting others much more than Japanese.

After we leaned the basic, we practiced it with some scenes from movies, which used the color very effectively and this became the assignment to next class - watch a movie and comment how the color means in the movie scenes.
